The Tundra Hut is located at 11,500 ft. in a beautiful alpine basin, surrounded by 13,000 ft. peaks, above Georgetown, Colorado.

It is a new cabin. Three large south facing windows in the living area give you an uninterrupted view of Argentine Peak, Mt. Wilcox, and Argentine Pass.

A large wood stove is your heating source. Solar lights in every room with battery powered lanterns and candles for backup.

This breathtaking high-alpine basin and lonely ghost town of Waldorf was once a major Colorado tourist destination. It is surprising that this wonderful high-country tour is not better known. The trailhead up Leavenworth Gulch, that leads to the Tundra Hut, can be reached in about 90 minutes from Denver. The hut is 5.8 miles up the main jeep road 248.1 aka Leavenworth Creek Rd. The initial 1.1 mile segment is steep and rough, but the main shelf road levels out and provides a gentler ascent into a beautiful basin surrounded by high peaks. The route follows a portion of the old rail bed of the Argentine Central, once one of the most thrilling rides in Colorado with grades of 10% and some curves of 145 degrees. Its slogan was “a lifetime in a day.”  Understandably, tourist revenue on the line outpaced freight revenue 10 to 1. After the mine played out in the 1920s, Waldorf became a ghost town.

In the winter, the Tundra Hut is very secluded, with very little human traffic. Note that you may encounter limited snowmobile traffic.

In the warmer months, be advised that this is a very popular area. It is frequented by ATVs and Jeep clubs during the day. Some find it a great area for trail running, mountain biking or a base camp for summiting 13'ers.  But as evening falls, most visitors head home, leaving the area almost exclusively yours.
